Manuel Pellegrini last night admitted Manchester City are suffering a crisis of confidence. The stunned City boss says he cannot understand why his stars are flopping so badly after their shock loss to CSKA Moscow.
"It is very difficult to understand how we played so bad from the
beginning," said Pellegrini. "We were so nervous, we gave away two
bad goals - we didn't play.
"It is difficult to know why. It was such a low performance from
important players. It is a strange moment. It is not just this competition. In
the last two weeks we are not playing.
"I don't understand why, but we must find a reason because we must
arrange a situation."
"It is a crisis of confidence; the mentality of the players. All of
them are important players, so I don't understand why they cannot play in the
Champions League.”
"We are nervous and I don't have a reason why we are so nervous."
Yaya Toure and Fernandinho were sent off to add to City's woes and will miss
their must-win game against Bayern Munich in three weeks' time.
Referee Tosas Sidiropoulos failed to send off Pontus Wernbloom for a second
yellow card offence when he wrongly cautioned Sergei Ignashevich instead and
ignored two late penalty appeals, but Pellegrini refused to blame him.
"The difference was not just the mistakes of the referee," he
said. "I don't want to have any excuses about the way we played. I don't
want to link the referee with this result."
City can still qualify if they win their last two games against Bayern, who
have already qualified, and Roma and the Bundesliga giants beat CSKA.
"We will try to qualify for the next stage," he said. "It's
more difficult, but it's not impossible."
Joe Hart added: "We've only got ourselves to blame. We went to Moscow
and gave away a two-goal lead. Tonight, we've given the game away. We're not
going to give up, but we have a mountain to climb."
