NYSC Khaki Uniform to Be Replaced with Adire – Minister Speaks

Hon. Ayodele Olawande, Minister of Youth Development

The iconic khaki uniform that has defined the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) for decades is set for a major change. The Federal Government has approved the replacement of the traditional khaki with Adire fabric as part of sweeping reforms to the NYSC scheme.

Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, made the confirmation today, Thursday, July 2, 2026, during an appearance on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief.

Responding to questions about local production, the minister stated:

“It’s Adire. So, Adire is being produced in Nigeria. We have them in Ogun; we have them in Kwara; we have textile industries. Let’s put our money back into the country.”

The move is aimed at boosting local textile manufacturers and ensuring that funds spent on uniforms stay within the Nigerian economy rather than going to imports.

Broader NYSC Reforms

This uniform change is just one part of a comprehensive overhaul of the 53-year-old scheme.

Other highlights include:

  • Redesigned uniforms that reflect professionalism and national pride
  • Possible shift from heavy combat boots to more comfortable options like Crocs or light training shoes
  • Extended orientation camp (from 3 to 6 weeks)
  • Stronger focus on skills development, entrepreneurship, and digital training
  • Technology-driven call-up process and more strategic postings

Why This Matters

For many Nigerians, the khaki uniform is more than just clothing; it’s a symbol of national service, unity, and unforgettable memories. Switching to Adire brings in a strong cultural element while supporting local industries. Adire, with its beautiful tie-dye patterns, represents creativity and heritage, especially from the Yoruba culture, but can be styled to reflect national unity.
