*The Swiss titan was felled by "14th seed" to set up an unlikely final against Japan's Kei Nishikori, who earlier beat Novak Djokovic
Marin Cilic has victoriously upset the odds by
defeating "second seed" Roger Federer in straight sets to book a US Open final
date with Kei Nishikori.
A powerful display from the Croatian
saw him ease to a straight set 6-3 6-4 6-4 win to eliminate the five-time
champions and set up an unlikely final.
"It's just an amazing day for
me," said Cilic, who, like Nishikori has never reached a Grand Slam final. "To be able to play like this I
never dreamed of; and I think today was my best performance ever in my
career."
Earlier, Nishikori had become the
first male Asian player to reach a Grand Slam when he saw off "number one seed" Novak Djokovic in four sets.
Astonishingly, Monday's climax will be
the first Grand Slam final not to feature Federer, Djokovic or Rafael Nadal
since the 2005 Australian Open, which saw Marat Safin defeat Lleyton Hewitt.
