The format
of the identification cards of corps members have been modified to include
biometric chips, forensic identification of blood groups during emergencies.
Also, the
certificate of the National Youth Service are to be made accessible to
employers of labour for authenticity.
The Director
General of NYSC, Brigadier-General Johnson Bamidele Olawumi stated
this in Abuja while addressing newsmen on the ongoing computerization of the
scheme’s activities.
This computerization
process of NYSC scheme commenced with the online registration for mobilization
of prospective corps members. The Director General said the introduction of
identification cards with biometric chips and biometric capturing of corps
members were other measures taken by the scheme to make service year more
conducive.
"The I.D.
cards now carry biometric chips whereby if a corps member, for example, is
involved in an accident and cannot talk, with the I.D. card, at the hospital,
they can scan and know what blood group if he needs blood", he said.
On the certificates
of national service, he said the innovation will make it easier for employers
of labour to authenticate the genuineness of NYSC Certificate.
"Employers
of labour all over the country usually write to us to verify the certificate of
national service of corps members or ex-corps members that they have employed;
very soon, wherever they are, can just log-on and verify the certificate to be
sure whether it is real certificate or fake", he said.
He said: "Henceforth, the certificate will carry the passports of the owners; the DG said
the scheme will adopt measures to conform with global practices to impact on
its performance and called for the support of the staff and corps members to
ensure success of the initiative."
