Mikel has taken a back-seat role at Stamford Bridge, making only 11
Premier League starts last season after falling behind Nemanja Matic,
Ramires, and the now-departed duo of David Luiz and Frank Lampard.
The Nigerian helped his country progress from their group at the
World Cup, but he looks to be nearing an exit after failing to convince
Jose Mourinho that he has a future at Chelsea, and the signing of Cesc
Fabregas looks to have hammered the final nail into Mikel’s Blues
career.
But the 27-year-old claims that Fabregas’ arrival does not mean the
end for him in London, as he feels Fabregas will take up a different
role in Mourinho’s side than what he currently offers.
“I don't have a problem with the signing of Cesc Fabregas,” said
Mikel. “We have played against each other a lot of times. We don't play
in the same position anyway.”
Mikel arrived at Chelsea during Mourinho's first spell in 2006 and
has gone on to make an impressive 206 league appearances for the Blues,
scoring three times.
Another Chelsea player potentially on the move is defender Patrick
van Aanholt, who has confirmed that he wants to leave the club after
failing to break into the first-team.
The 23-year-old could move to Feyenoord, who look set to say farewell
to Daryl Janmaat after the right-back reportedly agreed a deal to join
Newcastle.
