Nigeria: New Education Minister

Of recent, the education sector got its 18th Education Minister from June 1999. This spawned development came as a result of the government’s concern in the dwindling situation inherent in the education sector. Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau (former Governor of Kano State) eventually resumed office as the Minister of Education. This move is poised at filling the lacuna created by Professor Ruqqayattu Rufai, who bowed out of office as the Minister of Education in 2013.

Seeing the present state of the sector, many believe that any person who will be taking up the mantle of leadership in this sector must be passionate about education, have grand vision for it and be ready to level down hips of problems bothering the sector. There has been indeed a crass downturn in the Education Sector of Nigeria. The big question now is; Does Shekarau possess the above attributes?

The atmosphere has attained so many reactions on his appointment by those giving credence to his appointment and those discrediting it. Prior to his appointment, there has been countless industrial actions emanating from lecturers and students. He stands as a ship set on voyage on turbulence waters to calm situations down. A lot of groundwork need to be carried out by him to surmount the recurring problems the sector faces.

Like the iceberg, one cannot ascertain the actual size by mere observance of its tip. The question now is this; what are the indicators that brought Shekarau in as the Education Minister?
