NLC calls off strike in Benue

Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has called off the five-day strike embarked upon by workers in Benue state.

The NLC at the end of a meeting between it, the Trade Union Congress, TUC, and the state government, resolved that the TUC, NLC and JPSNC status quo-ante of the minimum wage in the state be maintained in the month of August.

The agreement which was contained in a communiqué signed by the Head of Service, Terna Ahua, the state NLC Chairman, Comrade Simon Anchaver, among others also agreed that a committee comprising government and Labour be constituted to discuss the dispute in question and arrive at amicable conclusion.

Labour also agreed that the current strike by workers be suspended to pave way for the discussion and gave one month from the date of the resolutions for the committee to finish its assignment.

The resolution also stated that no worker should be victimized as a result of participation in the strike.

US President Barack Obama said it is "premature" to send an experimental medicine for the treatment of Ebola to West Africa, as Liberia declared a state of emergency amid an outbreak that shows no signs of slowing. Obama said on Wednesday that he lacked enough information to green-light a promising medicine called ZMapp that was already used on two American aid workers who saw their conditions improve by varying degrees.

"We've got to let the science guide us and I don't think all the information is in on whether this drug is helpful," Obama said. "The Ebola virus, both currently and in the past, is controllable if you have a strong public health infrastructure in place." But he said: "the countries affected are the first to admit that what's happened here in the public health systems have been overwhelmed. They weren't able to identify and then isolate cases quickly enough."

Impeachment: Jonathan’s peace moves were rebuffed – Lawmaker

Mr. Tanko Maikatako, Minority Leader, Nasarawa State House of Assembly, has revealed that President Goodluck Jonathan’s efforts to amicably settle the dispute between the lawmakers and Gov. Umaru Almakura were rejected.

“The President’s efforts toward peace were not successful due to selfishness among the law makers,” Maikatako (APC), who represents Lafia Central constituency, said on Wednesday in Lafia.

According to him, Jonathan had appealed to the lawmakers to opt for dialogue rather than impeaching Al-Makura, but that the legislators insisted on removing the governor.

More feared infected with Ebola virus

There were fears, yesterday, that six of the eight primary contacts of the late Patrick Sawyer, may have tested positive to the Ebola virus, but are yet to show signs of the disease.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government has said that the seven remaining primary contacts currently in quarantine are showing no signs of the Ebola Virus Disease, EVD.

It was confirmed from a source that the six feared to have tested positive are among those who had serious contact with the late Liberian Ebola victim.

Murder of SAN: Court remands killer-son in prison custody

The Ogun State Police Command, yesterday, arraigned the 21-year-old student of Redeemers’ University, Tola Ajayi, who killed his 60-year-old father, Charles Ajayi, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN, before a chief magistrate’s court sitting in Owode-Egba in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of the state for murder.

The suspect, who was arraigned on a count charge of murder, was called to the dock at 9:58 am in suit number MOO/276c/2014.

Tola, a 300 level student of History and International Relations, was said to have stabbed his father to death at about 4am at Canaanland Street, Redeemed Christian Church of God Camp, Mowe in Obafemi-Owode Local Government Area of the state.

Commercial banks activities crippled in Benue State

Today marks the 4th working day since banks have been on strike in Benue State. Last week Friday, commercial banks in Benue, joined the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Union Congress,(TUC) in their ongoing strike, which commenced on July 30. This has crippled bank operations within the state and has also posed difficulties among individuals who use the banks as a medium for cash transactions.

The News Agency of Nigeria, (NAN) reports that the strike was to protest the deduction of staff salaries and non-payment of three years’ transport allowances owed them. They were also protesting against the non-implementation of the full minimum wage by the state government.

Part of the workers grievances were the non-implementation of 15 percent and two and half percent increment of their allowances and that of the pensioners in the state, respectively.
