Swimmer Ryan Lochte, a 12-time Olympic medalist, was robbed
at gunpoint in Rio while in a taxi Sunday (Aug. 14), according to the Washington Post.
Lochte, who was in a cab with three other members of the US
swim team heading to the Olympic village, was stopped by a group who were
posing as police officers. The robbers demanded money and personal items from
the athletes, according to USA Today.
Iliana Lochte, the swimmer’s mother, confirmed this
incident when she opened up and told the newspaper that Ryan Lochte had his
wallet stolen and text messaged her about the happening afterward. “I think
they’re all shaken up. There were a few of them,” she added. “No, they were
just, they just took their wallets and basically that was it.”
Lochte had
competed in swimming events last week, and was part of the the US team’s gold
medal-winning 4×200-meter freestyle relay team that also included Michael
Phelps. Lochte had completed his Olympic events, and was reportedly returning
with his teammates from a rave, according to the Post.
